HEASELANDS
AZALEAS NATIONAL COLLECTION
Deciduous
Azaleas fall into three main categories - Mollis forms, which have
large, scented flowers on bare branches in early May;
Knaphill/Exbury forms, bred in England for their trumpet-shaped
blooms, some of which are heavily scented; and Ghent forms, which
came from Belgium in the 1800's and have honeysuckle-shaped
flowers with protruding stamens and a wonderful fragrance in late
May. By crossing these plants, not just with themselves but with
(Rhododendron) Azalea occidentale and luteum, breeders have
created the wonderful array of plants we know today.
Within
our National Collections here at Heaselands we have over 370
Knaphill/Exbury types, 70 Mollis types and 25 other species and
seedling varieties.
The aim of all National Collection
Holders is the conservation of our plant heritage so that future
generations can enjoy these plants. Without these collections,
plant species would be lost forever.
